50 Strange Years at Rough River

July 4, 2008 marks the 50 year anniversary for the Strange clan at Rough River. While sitting in lawn chairs over a can of beer, Jim told me the story of how this tradition came to be. His father, the original James Strange, wanted to give his family a place away from the city to come together and unwind. A place for the ever growing clan to reconnect and play. A place to enjoy the simpler things in life. ”Camp” meant all of this then and it means all of this now. Rough River truly is a big part of being called “Strange.”

In honor of the big 5-0 nearly 65 Strange’s came to “camp” for the weekend. It was a huge production as you can imagine with so many people involved. I should add that it was a very well organized “huge production”. Each family had their designated personal spaces to pitch tents or park an RV (that’s what we elected to do!). There was games and prizes for all ages. There was music, karoke, a video montage of the last 50 years, a pig roast and luau, swimming, tanning and much more! There was never a dull moment.

As mentioned above, we spent the weekend housed in a 32’ RV. Talk about camping at its’ finest. We had the luxury of running water, bathroom and shower, fold out beds, AC, refrigerator and freezer, microwave and stove, etc. Must I go on? We weren’t exactly roughing it but we can pretend, right? I don’t believe I’ve ever actually been camping before so this was a great way to ease into the great outdoors.

With so much history and tradition at “camp” we have made a promise to visit more often. Thank you Strange Family for a most memorable weekend!
